Where does NowServingTO get its restaurant data?

Restaurant data is sourced directly from the City of Toronto Municipal Licensing and Standards Business Licences and Permits open dataset, refreshed daily. Each entry is verified currently open via Google Places, social media signals, and the operator's own website. Cuisine classification is generated by Anthropic Claude reading the operating name and website content.

Why are chain restaurants excluded from NowServingTO?

NowServingTO is a directory of independent, owner-operated new restaurants. Multi-location chains (Tim Hortons, Subway, Popeyes, KFC, Boston Pizza, McDonald's, etc.) are excluded so the directory surfaces the newest independent kitchens, the spots most likely to reflect specific diaspora and neighbourhood food scenes that aren't already on every food map.

What does "First seen" mean on NowServingTO?

"First seen" reflects the earlier of the City of Toronto licence-issued date or the first Toronto Public Health DineSafe inspection, whichever proves the restaurant was actually operating. Roughly 72% of currently-tracked restaurants have a DineSafe inspection record matched by address and name; for those, "First seen" is the inspection date (a public-health officer physically present is stronger evidence of operation than paper licensing). For the rest, "First seen" falls back to the licence-issued date. Both sources update daily.

How recent are the restaurants on NowServingTO?

Only restaurants licensed within the last 365 days appear on the directory. Older licences automatically fall out of the coverage window. The directory is rebuilt daily around 1:17 AM Toronto time from the City's open data feed, with each entry tagged with its estimated "First seen" date.
